STANDARDS FOR SAFETY HELMETS
EN 397:2012+A1:2012
The European standard for safety helmets (EN 397) provides manufacturers of safety
helmets with guidelines to ensure that the helmets provide adequate protection for
the wearer. It also specifies the requirements for the testing of safety helmets, as
they must be designed to protect the wearer from falling objects. Such protective
measures safeguard the user against possible consequences such as brain injuries or
skull fractures. The standard also includes protection against lateral deformation of
the helmet.
The helmet consists of two main parts - the hard outer protective shell and the
inner retention system. All helmets certified to EN 397 must meet the following
requirements:

1 - Shock absorption, vertical
2 - Protection against low temperatures (-20 °C or -30 °C)
3 - Penetration resistance (against sharp and pointed objects)
4 - Protection against very high temperatures (+150 °C)
5 - Flame resistance
6 - Electrical insulation (440 V)
7 - Chinstrap fastening: Chinstrap unfastens at a minimum of 150 N and a maximum of 250 N
8 - Lateral deformation
